A passage is planned to
sail to the Azores mid May to June 2010.
Previous crossing of the Bay of Biscay etc did
not provide visibility good enough to complete
the bulk of pa ssages using Celestial Navigation,
instead driving rain and winds were often
encountered. Indeed only two sun-sights were
obtained. A combination of dead
reckoning/estimated position navigation was used
but backed up by GPS.
Having completed the necessary RYA Ocean-Master
qualifying mileage a renewed attempt at a
passage using Celestial Navigation is planned.
Initially St Kilda West of the Hebrides was
selected, but, the Azores passage was preferred
for its (hoped for) warmer weather and seas.
Adventure minded crew are sought, from novice
to Ocean-Master candidates.
The
plan is to leave our base at Fambridge Yacht
Haven on the River Crouch in Essex mid May and
sail to Falmouth. This leg either non-stop or
3-6 short legs, all dependent on crew strength.
Berths are available for this leg at £300 for
the 7 days inclusive of food (marina costs
shared), this passage will be most suitable for
Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster Offshore
students, but novices will be welcome.
Celestial/traditional navigation to be used but
with GPS as back up/comparison.
After
a few days in Falmouth victualling the yacht, we
depart for the Azores non-stop. The distance of
about 1350M we hope to cover in 10 to 14 days
given fair winds.
A few
days in the Azores re-stocking before returning
to Falmouth, again 10-14 days.
Falmouth to base again 7 days about.
Costs:-·
-
Each UK leg at £300 per person for the 7
days anticipated passage duration.
-
Falmouth to Azores at £300 per crew per week
inc food.
-
Azores to Falmouth at £300 per crew per week

The yacht is a well founded 34ft
Westerly Vulcan. Cat 2 MCA coded with

skipper. Maximum 4 crew plus skipper.
