The RYA First Aid
Afloat Course
Many people feel they have
no need for a basic 1st aid skills teaching
course, and true a lot of the time a common
sense approach can often cope with minor
problems.
Unfortunately although a generally safe sport,
boating is not without its hazards or risks,
especially to the untrained or inexperienced.
This one day RYA course will cover all the
general 1st aid subjects but from a boating
point of view.
It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat whether
inland, inshore or bigger passages.
The topics covered include:-
• The recovery position.
• CPR, including the drowning protocol.
• Cold shock and hypothermia from immersion
and/or exposure.
• Seasickness and dehydration.
• Medical assistance or advice by VHF.
• Helicopter rescue.
Estuary Sailing takes pride in its training, a
maximum of 6 students per course, giving a ratio
of 2 students: 1 CPR training dummy.
The course duration is 8 hours (or longer if
required).
This course is acceptable for Coastal skipper
and yachtmaster practical exam candidates, RYA
practical instructors and skippers of small
commercial vessels up to Cat 2.
