This is our yacht ‘SAFE
RETURN’ shown here during a passage from
Plymouth to our base at Fambridge Yacht Haven on
the River Crouch in Essex.
Safe Return is a Westerly Vulcan pilot house
34ft Bermudan Sloop vessel.
Built to Lloyds specification in 1982 she is a
heavy duty, bilge keel yacht.
She was chosen after a long search for a very
seaworthy boat, one that is not only capable of
offshore use but also capable of exploring
shallower rivers and creeks to find secluded
anchorages and watch local wildlife. Safe Return
ticks most of the boxes!
She was also chosen for sail training and her
forgiving nature should allow students to
concentrate on learning the techniques of
sailing and boat handling rather than hanging on
to a vessel heeling excessively. Another benefit
is that people who are a little apprehensive can
enjoy being on a steady yacht to build
confidence.
Able to accommodate 7 crew (3 double and 1
single berth) she will however usually take a
maximum of 5 including your skipper.
With two private double and one single cabins
everyone should have a good nights sleep!
With running hot water, hot air heating, wind
and solar power generators she is capable of
independent travel whatever the circumstance.

Return is equipped to a very high standard, to
meet both the RYA training vessel safety
specification and the higher spec Maritime and
Coastguard Agency Code for vessels operating
commercially.
Safe Return is MCA coded for up to 8 people and
operating up to 60 miles (Category 2 waters)
offshore.
All equipment is either new (major refit for
coding in July 2008) or maintained in excellent
condition.
Her engine is a newly fitted Yanmar 55hp diesel
engine giving excellent ability to safely assist
her passage when weather or circumstance
dictates.
Safe Return has good galley facilities and a
comfortable spacious saloon with good visibility
all round.
